A tip of the wing to the upland season in WA.
Fifty degrees and sunny in January makes for a fine hunt, particularly when coming off of negative temps and snow. We had just finished running one of our favorite late season coverts when Finn flopped down for a quick sun bath. No birds here this year, but it was still a fine hunt after a long stretch with little field time. There is no better separation from the stresses of life than working a good cover with a bird dog!
It’s been a minute since the girls and I were afield, and as the second photo suggests, they are ready to get after it. I am as well, and the season closure is barreling down on us. Hopefully we can squeeze in a couple more days like this days chasing pheasant in the next two weeks. What is everyone else hunting this month?
We’ve had some challenges getting afield this year, but we had fun training in the snow with chukar recently. Zeta and Kea both did great! Zeta even held point for the flush and secured the bird after it fell in thick cattails. Seems like she’s all grown up (but not really)!
Prairie birds and heirloom double guns are reason enough to chase birds, but nothing beats following a dog in the amber glow of the bluebird days of November.
Zeta has made it clear time and again that birds are not a priority for her. I need to just accept this little girl for who she is and move on.
